Media Language:
The show manages to escape from being labelled a sitcom as it is a single camera show. It does though borrow elements from sitcoms such as having little stories within every different episode.
Institution:
Created by a company named "Doozer"
Genre:
Hybrid Genre. The main genre apparent throughout is comedy, but there also are elements of a sitcom genre as there happens to be mini episodes within an episode.
Representation:
There are many different representation in Scrubs which constantly contrast each other depending on the episode. There are different representations such as the way females are represented as weak and as sex objects, but then other female characters defy this stereotype as they are strong willed and in control.
In other episodes there have also been issues to do with the way black people are represented but again certain characters defy the stereotype.
Audience:
Scrubs is usually broadcasted on Paramount Comedy, E4, and ABC1. The new series though come first to E4 and Paramount Comedy and there shows start at 8pm usually so therefore I would assume that the show is aimed at an older audience as they would be home for the show. (That is assuming that most people work 9-5 shifts.) It also would be likely to be aimed at a more wealthier audience as the people who work within the hospital are mostly high paid. The show would also be of interest to doctors and nurses as they could possibly relate to the show and create a sense of personal identity or have a personal relationship.
Ideology and Values:
Narrative:
The main narrative apparent throughout is following the lives of certain people who work in the hospital. Also showing their social lives and everything they do in order for the audience possibly to be able to familiarise themselves with the characters

FUNNY SCRUBS QUOTES
about Dr. Cox and Jordan]
Carla: Why does he keep going back to her?
Turk: I don't know. Why do people keep marrying Larry King? The man looks like a frog.
Janitor: Some hooligan keeps disconnecting the alarm. I told Security to look into it. But no, no, they'd rather catch the guy who's stealing organs from the transplant ward.
Carla: [about a male intern] You're right; he definitely has a cute little butt.
Elliot: It's almost like it's been sculpted.
J.D.: Who cares? Everyone has a cute butt; I have a cute butt.
Carla: You should bring it in someday.
J.D.: This, this isn't like being a janitor, okay! It's not just like something everybody can do. Janitor: Oh. So you can do my stuff, but I can't do yours?
J.D.: Yes!
Janitor: Okay, hotshot, what would you use to get a coffee stain up off a tile floor?
J.D.: I don't know... the... rough side of a sponge? [silence]
Janitor: Dammit.
Turk: This is the reason why your headache didn't go away: That's actually pronounced analgesic, not anal-gesic. Sir, the pills go in your mouth.
Carla: Elliot, you know how they say no-one will ever love you until you learn to love yourself? Elliot: My mother used to say, "No-one will ever love you."
Turk: How can you make love to your wife if she's at fat camp?
Dr. Kelso: The real question is: how can I make love to her when she's not at fat camp?
[about his wife]
Dr. Kelso: Fat camp. Six years she's been going there, and the only thing getting any thinner is my wallet!

The Main Cast
The main cast of Scrubs (from Left to Right):
Donald Faison (Turk) - Cocky surgeon, humour used with him is alot to do with race and stereotypes
Ken Jenkins (Dr. Kelso) - Chief of Medicine at the hospital. Only really thinks for himself and ignores many things others say. Also creates humour through his patronising attitude.
Neil Flynn (Janitor) - Janitor who always is looking for ways to systematically torture JD
John C McGinley (Dr Cox) - Probably the best doctor around but has a huge ego problem. Loves going on his little rants, calls JD by girls names only, always seems to have a complaint!!
Zach Braff (JD) - He is the main protagonist in the show. Sensitive person who is ALWAYS thinking, and a really good feature on this show his that we hear his thoughts out aloud. This creates humour and also can create a personal relationship with the character as we get to see exactly how he feels.
Judy Reyes (Carla) - Married to Turk and is always helping others out. Also loves to tell people how to live their lives and loves to be the one who gives advice to everyone.
Sarah Chalke (Elliot) - Vulnerable doctor and she is always usually upset about something! Always seems to be in a relationship and also cries alot as well as speaks in a very high pitched tone when she goes on a little rant.
My Thesis
How has the hospital genre been subverted to have a comic effect, with particular reference to "Scrubs"?
I chose to base my question around Scrubs as it is a show I enjoy and also there is alot to talk about, particularly to do with the genre. I can explore how the genre has been subverted in recent times to have a comic effect. Shows such as Scrubs, Green Wing and Grey's Anatomy are all based in hospitals but differ from what the hospital genre tends to be which is usually depressing.
